Blooming Brides

One of The Most Important Details:

Flowers are always an important factor when planning a wedding. Many brides and grooms choose flowers that fill the room with color and align with wedding traditions. For many centuries flowers have been used in ceremonies because they are a symbol of good luck and happiness. Every flower has a meaning and couples who are planning a wedding can rely on these to choose their flowers for their event.

The use of flowers during events started during medieval times when bathing was not a common practice. They would be used to cover up foul odors. Flowers would also add color which helped to make the day more joyous.

Today, flowers are one of the most important details to a wedding. They are used in several aspects of the ceremony and reception.

What’s the Best Fit For You?

Think about what items you would like to incorporate into your day .Flowers are in:

  • Centerpieces
  • Bouquets
  • Boutonnieres
  • Aisle Runners
  • Archways
  • Drink Toppers
  • Cake Decorations
  • The Getaway Car

This list is not all encompassing and can be used as a starting point. You will also need to consider other factors like:

  • What is your budget?
  • What type of flowers are you looking for?
  • What is the best fit for you and your partner?
  • What is your theme?
  • How many flowers do you want?
  • What is your style?
  • What are the colors and types of flowers I would like to use?
  • What is in season when we are getting married?
  • What flowers will have to be shipped and what can I purchase locally?
  • Am I going to DIY it?
  • Am I going to have a florist, or a friend put everything together?

Out of all of these questions, the most important one is “What is my budget?” The cost of flowers can really add up. On average brides and grooms spend between $1,500-$3,000. It is all about setting priorities. If flowers are something you want to invest in for your special day, then do it! But be aware of the price tag that will accompany this particular line item on the wedding budget.

Can you tell which flowers are real and fake?

All of these look like real flowers, right? WRONG! Only one of these bouquets is real!

The Classic Look:

People love real flowers and the soft touches of the floral scents that fill the room. Studies have shown that people are attracted to the symmetry they see in flowers. They love the formation of colors that they see within the petals. On the contrary real flowers can tend to break the bank. They also have an expiration date and usually do not last beyond a few days after a wedding.

Real flowers are special, but they can also be a lot of money, especially if they are not in season. If you do not want to pay for a florist, you could DIY and buy in bulk.

Be careful if you elect this option. Flowers are very sensitive and need to be stored properly. Timing the delivery correctly will also mean the difference between a robust fresh bouquet and a half-dead one. Time will also be needed to put all your floral items together. The days leading up to your wedding are usually the busiest and you might not have the time for this.

Something a Little Edgy:

An alternative to real flowers, are Sola Wood or silk flowers. Sola Wood flowers have recently become popular for weddings. These are not brown, as you might be thinking. They are dyed to fit your theme and desired colored palette. There are so many different sizes, colors, types, and designs for Sola Wood flowers.

An additional alternative is silk flowers, these are similar to wood where they can last forever and are very light.  Silk flowers are great for a beach or cruise wedding. They travel well for destination weddings and if they get wrinkled you can easily “air them out” or steam them to come “back to life”. Silk flowers can also be used for a rehearsal wedding, or for the bouquet toss.

Both Sola Wood and silk flowers are great alternatives for someone who loves flowers, but is allergic.

A Fresh Start:

Another way to save money on flowers is to create combinations of real, silk and wood flowers. You can use real flowers for your bouquets and wood flowers in your centerpieces. You can also do a combination of wood and silk, or real and silk flowers together  in bouquets and centerpieces. Another option is to hire a professional florist to create the most complicated item or items for your wedding day. You could then buy the flowers in bulk and DIY the smaller, simpler items. You could even create an activity for family, friends and the bridal party to do together during the two days leading up to the wedding.

If you are still on the fence about spending a lot of money on the floral aspect of your wedding day, or you just can’t afford it, you still have options. Host your wedding ceremony and/or your reception in a garden!  Do a Google Search for the options local to you. You can also consider town, state or national parks. Farms, museums or botanical gardens can also be an option. Here are a few in the Southeastern New England region:
